Students in the first grade are getting a hands-on lesson in science this spring, thanks to a special classroom project made possible by the school’s PTA. Through a partnership with Rent The Chicken, the class has welcomed fertilized eggs and all the necessary supplies to observe the life cycle of a chicken from start to finish.
The project began this week, as the eggs arrived and were carefully placed into an incubator in the classroom. Over the next few weeks, students will watch closely as the eggs develop, learning about the stages of growth that take place before hatching. Teachers are incorporating real-time observation into lessons, giving students a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world science.
One of the most exciting parts of the experience will be a process known as candling, which allows students to look inside the eggs using a special light. This technique helps reveal the developing chick, offering a glimpse into the growth happening beneath the shell.
When the big day arrives, students will witness the chicks hatching right before their eyes—an unforgettable moment that brings the life cycle lesson full circle. After hatching, the class will spend about a week caring for and interacting with the baby chicks, deepening their understanding of animal development and responsibility.
The excitement in the classroom has been building since the eggs arrived, with students eager to check on their progress each day. In addition to benefiting the first graders, the school plans to share this experience with other students, giving more children the chance to observe and learn from this engaging project.
This hands-on initiative not only supports science education but also sparks curiosity, wonder, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world—one egg at a time.
