reading pets

October 9, 2025 — In a heartwarming effort to make reading even more fun, Grade 1 students have launched a monthly reading challenge like no other! The initiative combines imagination, literacy, and a whole lot of love — all centered around their newly adopted “Reading Pets.”

Earlier this month, each first grade student was given a cuddly Reading Pet — soft, friendly companions meant to encourage cozy, consistent reading habits. The excitement was contagious as children named their pets. But the fun didn’t stop there. To ensure their Reading Pets felt safe and right at home, students also built custom pet houses using recycled materials and lots of creativity. From colorful cardboard cottages to mini book nooks, each home was designed with care — a perfect reading retreat for both pets and their proud readers.

As part of the challenge, students are setting monthly reading goals tailored to their own pace and preferences. Whether it’s five books or fifteen, the goal is the same: to build strong reading habits while sharing the joy of stories with their furry (or feathered!) friends.

With big smiles, big imaginations, and even bigger book piles, Grade 1 is off to a fantastic start. Stay tuned for updates each month as the reading adventures continue!
