On December 16, 2024, the students at Farm Hill Elementary School were in for a treat as renowned author and illustrator Brian Lies visited for an exciting day of storytelling and creative exploration. The event provided an unforgettable experience for young readers and budding artists in third, fourth, and fifth grade as a part of their Reaching Beyond the Classroom Grant experience.
Brian Lies, best known for his Bats at the Beach series, captivated the students with his engaging presentation about the art of writing and illustrating children's books. With a dynamic blend of humor, creativity, and insight, Lies shared his journey as an author, explaining the process of turning an idea into a fully realized story and illustration. His interactive session included a behind-the-scenes look at how he creates his beloved characters, from sketches to final drawings, in his sketch book that he takes everywhere with him.
Throughout the afternoon, students had the chance to ask Lies questions about his creative process, favorite books, and what inspires him. He also led a drawing workshop, where the children had the opportunity to provide Lies with ideas and details so that he could sketch their characters.
For many of the students, Brian Lies’ visit was not just a chance to meet a published author, but an opportunity to gain insight into the world of creative writing and illustration. The day was a memorable one, sparking new ideas, inspiring young artists, and reminding everyone at Farm Hill that the power of storytelling is limitless.
